Foundation For Women's Health, Research And Development (FORWARD)

Group Purpose:

The Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development (FORWARD) is an African-women led, international non-governmental organisation that works to advance the sexual and reproductive health and human rights of African girls and women. FORWARD is committed to eliminating harmful gender-based discriminatory practices that violate the sexual and reproductive health and rights of girls and women such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage. FORWARD seeks to build capacity and provide leadership and support to facilitate effective policy and programme development to end gender discriminatory practices.
In the UK FORWARD:

• provides information and advice in relation to FGM and publishes and distributes material for professionals, community workers and the general public.
• provides training on FGM and child protection to health, education, child protection and social services professionals and community organisations.
• has an FGM resource library and video loaning service
• provides counselling and support to young African women facing a personal crisis as a consequence of FGM.
• works with FGM practicing communities to support and promote the rights and health of African girls and women and encourage the abandonment of FGM.
• conducts research studies into the knowledge, attitudes and practices of FGM practicing communities.

Internationally FORWARD:

• collaborates with international organisations and African non-governmental organisations working to eliminate harmful traditional practices.
• has several programs in Africa seeking to promote the health and reproductive rights of girls and women and improve health service delivery.
