Networks:

Resource Group for Work with Girls and Young Women (Edinburgh)

Purpose:
Who we are-
  • We’re an Edinburgh citywide network, with some members in other areas, which supports youth & Social workers and those working with young people to undertake fun, equalities focused, single gender youth work with girls/young women. We have been running since 1982 and were known as Lothian Girls Work Group.
    • This network is attended by workers from various sectors: youth work, education, social work and women’s support agencies working to promote girls & young women’s work.
    • The main aim of the network is to provide mutual support and information by allowing workers to share best practice and exchange information about services as well as to gain mutual support from each other in training sessions.
    • Various workers around the City host the network’s forums and workers affiliating to the network help set its agenda.
    • Membership of the network is always changing, as new workers come into the field, or change posts and workers from all agencies both statutory and voluntary are welcome to attend.
    • The network receives very little funding usually and relies on the members’ affiliations, own resources and goodwill within to continue to survive.
  • This year, 2007, we have been given £7500 from Awards from ALL
  • Activities:
  • We’re a network of people who are interested in seeing things happen to create space for young women to have fun, gain confidence and get their voices heard. People get involved to actually make things happen, like bringing the groups they work with together for an event, having discussions, etc.
  • Practice Development Workshops
    • We run regular workshops in Edinburgh for workers exploring; self harm, complimentary therapies, girls- getting active, challenging homophobia, racism, sexism, bullying, listening skills, young peoples rights, assertiveness, sexual health, working with young people and challenging behaviour. We held a seminar on getting Girls Work back on the Youth Work agenda in 2004. Get involved and share your skills and fun ideas!
