Women’s International League For Peace and Freedom (WILPF)
- Purpose:
- WILPF is the oldest women’s peace organisation in the world. The organisation aims to bring together women of different political beliefs and philosophies who are united in their determination to study, make known and help abolish the causes and legitimisation of war.
- WILPF campaigns on issues of peace, human rights and disarmament at the local, national and international levels, participating in the ongoing international debates on peace and security issues, conflict prevention and resolution, on the elimination of all forms of discrimination, and the promotion and protection of human rights.
- WILPF sees as its ultimate goal the establishment of an international economic order founded on the principles of meeting the needs of all people and not on those of profit and privilege.
- WILPF has national sections in around 35 countries worldwide. The UK section of WILPF has branches across the country and an office in London.
- Activities:
- Internationally WILPF lobbies the UN on issues of peace, security and gender justice: we have two international projects, Reaching Critical Will (http://www.reachingcriticalwill.org) and Peace Women (http://www.peacewomen.org).
- UK activities include:
- Working groups, which study and share information and develop analysis around particular areas of WILPF’s work. Groups include: violence against women, human rights, the environment, disarmament, economic justice and UN Security Council Resolution 1325. These operate by email and personal meetings. They also organise events, for example a recent film screening in Reading.
- We lobby parliament, respond to consultations, hold meetings and write letters alone and in coordination with other organisations. We also run and organise campaigns, for example last year we ran a very successful postcard campaign against human trafficking.
- We organise an annual seminar, the theme of which this year will be the environment, militarism and women.
- Branches hold stalls, meetings and events in their local area. We also have an international e-network for younger women and new WILPF members.
- We organise fundraising and social events.
