Women in Surgical Training (soon to change to Women in Surgery - WinS)
- Purpose:
- WIST was originally established to tackle the under-representation of women in surgery, particularly at consultant level. Targets were set, with the aim that by 2010, 20% of consultant surgeons would be female. WIST's secondary objectives have included:
- Encouraging young women to consider a career in surgery
- The provision of networking opportunities for women in surgery
- The provision of role models for potential female surgeons
- The provision of advice, guidance and pastoral support for those women already in surgery or considering entering it
- Campaigning for working patterns that are more suitable to women's needs
- Attitudinal change to view women surgeons as a integral part of the profession
- Activities:
- Networking events
- Annual conference
- Research projects
- Policy campaigns
- Out reach events to younger potential women surgeons
