Women in Surgical Training (soon to change to Women in Surgery - WinS)

Purpose:
WIST was originally established to tackle the under-representation of women in surgery, particularly at consultant level. Targets were set, with the aim that by 2010, 20% of consultant surgeons would be female. WIST's secondary objectives have included:
  • Encouraging young women to consider a career in surgery
  • The provision of networking opportunities for women in surgery
  • The provision of role models for potential female surgeons
  • The provision of advice, guidance and pastoral support for those women already in surgery or considering entering it
  • Campaigning for working patterns that are more suitable to women's needs
  • Attitudinal change to view women surgeons as a integral part of the profession
  • Activities:

  • Annual conference
  • Research projects
  • Policy campaigns
  • Out reach events to younger potential women surgeons
