Networks:

womenintechnology.co.uk

Purpose:
  • womenintechnology.co.uk is a leading on-line job board and networking group for women working in the IT profession in the UK.
  • Launched in March 2005, womenintechnology has developed into a high profile job board and networking forum organisations can use to attract more female talent.
  • We have built up an active network of c2,000 technology professionals (backed up by a larger network of nearly 10,000 female technologists) who are very committed to promoting women in IT in both the public and private sectors.
  • We recognise the immense importance of encouraging more young women into technology careers and passionately believe in promoting the vast array of opportunities that are available to women in the IT profession in the UK
  • .
  • We hope that the work we're doing will highlight to more women just how rewarding a career in IT can be.
  • Our job board helps major firms to raise their profile amongst female technologists in the UK - highlighting why they are an ideal place for a woman to have a successful technology career. In turn the job board enables female IT jobseekers to apply directly to companies which are actively seeking more female staff.
  • Activities:
    Events:
  • We organise regular networking events which we believe play a vital part in attracting (and retaining) women in the IT profession.
  • These range from formal debates with guest speakers and interactive audience discussion to informal drinks evenings where people can get together in a non-work environment. Event topics have included "Mentoring for Success", "Flexible Working in Technology" and Positive Impact and Influencing Tools"- topics that had been requested by members of the womenintechnology network as areas that they wanted to learn more about and which we felt would help women to progress further in their technology careers.
  • This is very much a focus for the networking events we hold - giving women the extra help and information they need to succeed in what is very much the male dominated world of IT work.

  • Sponsorship
  • As well as our own events that we arrange, in 2006 we also sponsored the BlackBerry Women & Technology Awards (Most Promising Women in Technology - Under 25 award) and a new category at the European Banking Technology Awards (Outstanding Contribution by a Female in Financial Technology).
  • Both of these events further raised the profile of successful women working in technology, hopefully encouraging more women into the field. We will be sponsoring similar awards in 2007.

  • Keeping in Touch
  • In addition to our job board and networking events, we act as a channel for information through both our weekly e-news letter (which has news stories specifically of interest to female technologists) and via regular emails that we send to the network. These emails give details about events, surveys or questionnaires and other topics which we believe will be of interest to the network.
  • Through our links with organisations such as the Intellect Women in IT Forum, the BCS Women's Forum and the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET, we are able to keep the womenintechnology network up-to-date with new initiatives or research programmes that they can get involved with.
    Region or specific community:
Events have been in London - or have done so far - but we have a UK focus. Our network, as the name suggests, is for women working in technology.
