Expecting a baby? Excited? Anxious? Unsure of what choices you have about your care?
On the AIMS helpline we get calls all the time from women who have been told they have to do this or they must do that. They are anxious and concerned. Their gut feeling tells them they do not want to 'comply' – they are often dubious about the safety or necessity for what's being proposed, or they feel it's just not right for them, or their baby. 'Am I allowed to refuse a scan?' they ask. YES! You are. It's your body. It is your baby. You are the one who should be making the decisions after advice from your midwife or doctor.
Yet pregnant women are told
'I'll book you in at the clinic …'
'You'll have to see the consultant'
'You have to have this test'
'I've made an appointment for your scan next week'
'We don't allow women to go over 41 weeks'
Am I allowed? has been written by Beverley Lawrence Beech, and expert in women's rights in maternity care, based on her 25 years' experience in advising parents about their rights. This 112 page book sets out to help you know your options and rights through all stages of pregnancy and birth, a must for any pregnant woman who wants to exercise informed consent and be more in control of her pregnancy and labour.
