Fawcett's final report of Commission on Women and the Criminal Justice System
The final report of Fawcett's Commission on Women and the Criminal Justice System was launched on 31st March 2004 at a conference addressed by Cherie Booth QC, who warned of a 'crisis of confidence' in the system.
The report is the result of a year-long Commission chaired by Vera Baird QC MP, the first of its kind internationally. It found that the criminal justice system, which has been designed principally by men for men, systematically disadvantages women right across the system as victims, suspects, those convicted of crime and workers.
The launch was also addressed by Home Office Minister the Rt Hon Baroness Scotland QC and the Solicitor General Harriet Harman QC MP, and the report was welcomed by the Home Secretary David Blunkett MP, who promised to 'study the report and its recommendations very closely.'
