Refuge comment following research by Comic Relief and the Department Of Health showing the numbers of older people abused at home
“Comic Relief and The Department of Health’s research illustrates the shocking reality of elder abuse in this country. Refuge is concerned about the 57% of women aged between 66-74 who are experiencing violence and abuse at the hands of their husbands or partners.
Domestic violence it a serious crime and we have to recognise that it has the same devastating effect on older women as it does on younger women. An older woman is often financially and emotionally dependent on her partner and as a result can feel trapped with no control over her life. She is likely to have lived with abuse for a very long time. She is often reluctant to admit what is happening, feels ashamed, or believes that there is no point trying to start a new life. Imagine facing the prospect of starting again at the age of 70. How would you feel about being on your own for the first time in 50 years?
“Older women may not be aware that domestic violence is a crime, that help is available and that they don’t have to cope on their own. Refuge recognises that there is a need for more support and services specifically for older women but I urge anyone living with domestic violence to seek help. Talk to someone you trust. I have worked with many older women who have lived with domestic violence for decades. But with Refuge’s help, they are able to escape the grip of violence in their home rebuild their lives. You can too.”
