Women's Education in Building WEB West and South

Although Women in London received notice of WEB's liquidation in April this year, we did not have any background information about their closure. We are including the following two reports about their closure now that e have become aware of them. (October 2004)

Liquidation for leading women's business centre

Women's Education in Building (WEB) has gone into liquidation just one year after its cutting edge women's business centre was launched. Miranda Seymour-Smith, who was Chief Executive of the pan-London organisation for its last six months, says “the trend for short-term project funding leaves us all vulnerable, there needs to be a more sustainable approach”.

Most women targeted initiatives in the UK have almost no core or sustainable funding base and for WEB, as a particularly large and successful organisation, the problems became magnified.

The move to liquidation followed WEB's failure to gain 2nd round DTI Phoenix Development Funding. Phoenix has become the primary source of funding supporting business start-ups for under-represented groups in England and fears are mounting in the trade and national press that RDAs will not be willing or able to take over this remit when Phoenix is due to end in 2006.

WEB are determined to continue to meet the huge demand from local women and are soon to launch a new organisation 'Agenda - Construction Skills for Women'.

Rescue package for women builders

Women who attended a unique all-female building college had their courses saved by a merger with CNWL (The College of North West London). Following the news that WEB (Women's Education in Building) had gone into receivership CNWL took swift action to enable the women to finish their qualifications. The students have now restarted their programmes at the College's Willesden site, supported by many of their former tutors and initially staying in their all-female groups.

CNWL's Head of Faculty Frank Horan said: “They have lost about six weeks of tuition, so we will be running their courses till the end of July to help them, instead of stopping at the end of June. We are also putting on Saturday morning classes for them, additional to their normal classes, to help them prepare for exams.”

Frank said that at some point the College would integrate the WEB students into mainstream courses because in industry that was the norm, but this would not be immediate.

He added: “We were able to move so fast to respond to WEB's dire need because we are the premier construction centre in Greater London.”

The continuing employment of the former WEB tutors remains to be decided.
