Women in Black : Background Information

Women in Black (WiB) is a world-wide network of women committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism and other forms of violence.

We are not an organization so much as a means of mobilization and a formula for action.

Women in Black London is typical of many other WiB groups in that we hold a regular weekly vigil, silent and women-only, wearing black, carrying boldly-worded placards and handing out informative leaflets.

Our London vigils are from 6 till 7 pm almost every Wednesday, around the Edith Cavell statue, opposite the door of the National Portrait Gallery, St.Martin's Place, London WC2.

Women in Black always employ non-violent and non-aggressive forms of action.

In addition to vigils we engage in many other forms of non-violent direct action, such as sitting down to block a road, entering military bases and other forbidden zones, refusing to comply with orders, and "bearing witness".

Wearing black in some cultures signifies mourning, and feminist actions dressed in black convert women's traditional passive mourning for the dead in war into a powerful refusal of the logic of war.
