Refuge

Group Purpose:

Refuge is the UK’s largest single provider of specialist services to women and children escaping domestic violence.

Domestic violence affects women regardless of disability, age, culture or social background. In this country, one woman in four will experience domestic violence at some point in her lifetime.

On any one day Refuge supports over 1,000 women and children through refuges and community outreach schemes. We operate services for children; counselling for abused women; a team of independent legal advocates and specialist services for women from minority ethnic communities.

Our political lobbying has been instrumental to the shift in the legal understanding of domestic violence and we also challenge social attitudes through award-winning public education campaigns.
